The fireball lit up the sky.

“You hurt, Jack?”

“Shaken, but good,” I said from my supine position in the snow, like a snow angel. “You?”

Stefan ran over and fell near my feet. “How did you know?”

I rolled over and searched for the singular headlight from Dziadek’s snowmobile. Only a black slate. “Where the hell is he?” I muttered.

“The old man? No idea. Jack, how did you know?”

“Back at the barn, when I did my inspection, I saw a piece of duct tape below the handlebars on our snowmobile. Initially, I thought it was just holding together a piece of cracked plastic. But it stuck in my mind.”

“And from that you thought we were sitting on a bomb?”

“Not really. It was just odd, like his behavior. Have to assess every—” I stopped short. A whirring engine was approaching. “Pretend you’re dead. That’s our best hope of surprising Dziadek.”

“But why would he—”

“Just drop down and pretend you’re dead. Have to assume he has a weapon.”

Stefan flopped onto the snow. I did the same. “Don’t move a single muscle,” were my last words to Stefan. Dziadek drove up in his snowmobile a second later. I snuck a peek. He motored slowly around our space.

“Should we jump him?”

Stefan was talking out loud! I didn’t respond and could only hope he would keep his mouth shut.

As the fire from the explosion crackled nearby, Dziadek’s snowmobile drew closer to us, then stopped. He could shoot us just to ensure we were dead. I realized I was holding my breath when I heard him speaking. The words were impossible to understand, but I assumed he was on a phone. And then silence. After a few more seconds, the engine revved. He was about to leave. If we were stranded, we would die of frostbite.

Just as the snowmobile started to pull away, I launched myself off the ground, took four running steps, and leaped for Dziadek. My shoulder clocked his chin. His hand stuck on the throttle an extra second, and the engine whined.

The snowmobile bucked right. Flipped onto its side. The two of us tumbled over the machine. Unable to extend my arms, I torpedoed into the snow headfirst. Stefan ran over just as I pulled my head out.

“He is dead, Jack. You killed him.”
